    Air Sparging/Biosparging

Air sparging is an effective in-situ remedial technology for groundwater impacted by volatile organic compounds and/or readily biodegradable compounds (e.g., petroleum products). The air sparging process involves injection of a controlled volume of air at a specific pressure into the contaminated groundwater to volatize the contaminants and to increase the amount of oxygen in the aquifer for degradation of contaminants. This technology requires a thorough understanding of site geology. Depending upon site location, conditions, geology and potential receptors, the sparge vapors may need to be recovered and treated. Various compressors or blowers can be utilized to inject the air (including positive displacement blowers, rotary vane type compressors or rotary screw compressors). Proper equipment selection and system layout/design are critical to effectively implementing this technology. Air sparging has broad appeal and regulatory acceptance due to its simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness. next
