Natural Attenuation
Quite often the natural processes underway at a site are sufficient to remediate the impacted media in a reasonable timeframe. This is particularly true for sites impacted with petroleum compounds that are readily degradable. Natural attenuation also is appropriate at sites where low level impacts remain after a period of active remediation, in which case the natural processes may cleanup the residual impacts as fast as would continuous operation of the remedial system, but in a more cost effective manner. Detailed monitoring programs are typically required to demonstrate the presence of natural attenuation processes, ensure degradation byproducts do not pose further risk to receptors, and to demonstrate progress toward cleanup. next
