    Treatment Walls/Barriers

Treatment walls can include permeable or impermeable barriers to direct impacted groundwater through a specific treatment zone. Treatment walls can be installed around the contamination, at the downgradient edge of a plume and/or immediately downgradient of the source area to prevent further migration of elevated levels of contaminants. Physical, chemical, or microbial processes can be implemented to treat water as it flows through the permeable walls (e.g., sparge walls/trenches, injection zones, or walls/trenches filled with reactive media such as iron filings or activated carbon) or as it is directed to recovery wells or gates within impermeable walls (e.g., slurry wall). The flow through the treatment gates or walls is driven by natural groundwater gradients, and hence, these systems are often referred to as passive treatment walls. Key design considerations include adequate reaction time in treatment zones and measures necessary to prevent bypass. next
